Start before perfection

Yoga Off the Mat: Don’t let perfection prevent you from getting started

Since making Black Door Yoga a reality back in March, I’m constantly challenged to take action on things before they are perfect. I used to struggle with this; I wanted everything to be organized, neat, and perfect before sharing it with the world.

I found this same habit even on my mat. I wasn’t willing to try a posture because I couldn’t do it without a modification, or just couldn’t do it at all.

Running the studio has been a major force in breaking that habit. If I’d waited for everything to be perfect before opening our doors 7 months ago, BDY probably still wouldn’t have been open! It’s taught me to iterate, to push things out when they aren’t perfect (hello typos) and to trust that I’ll figure it out on the way.

The approach requires me to keep things simple. It’s so much easier to start something new + share before it’s perfect if the goal or outcome is small. Another studio example: I’ve been kicking around the idea of making a marketing plan for 2 months now. Last night, I sat down and made one Facebook ad. It’s not part of a bigger plan yet, but rather than remaining inactive without a full plan in place, I feel confident to start small and imperfectly.

Maybe there’s something in your life right now that you feel you’re holding back on because it isn’t perfect. Or maybe there is a posture that you always skip or modify in class because you feel like you can’t do it well.

Hit reply and let me know where perfection is holding you back – and perhaps challenge yourself this week to see what you’re OK with doing now, rather than waiting for perfection later.
